A wolf never flees in the face of its foe: Altered Beast | Segaiden 89

Another Altered Beast conversation? Yes, well, this is the one that counts. Wash away the unhappy aftertaste of the Master System conversion with a port that is even more technically impressive and doesn't come with any caveats. The Genesis version looks so good and plays so faithfully to the original arcade machine that Sega of America enshrined it as the U.S. pack-in for the system, effectively escalating it to Hang-On/Super Mario Bros./Tetris status. (Or Gyromite status if you want to be sassy, I guess.) Sure, Altered Beast isn't a particularly deep or thoughtful game, but as this episode gets into, that's kind of the point. It looks great, it plays well, it supports two players at once, it has the depth of a sidewalk puddle after an afternoon squall: the perfect pack-in.
