<div id="yt-video-description">And here we go: the final licensed NES release for 1989. We did it! We made it through the year. And I've saved one of the best for last. Willow from Capcom is the Zelda sequel that a lot of NES fans wanted over Zelda II: a top-down action game with role-playing elements and just a l'il touch of storytelling. In fact, it's so Zelda-like that you'll eventually see a lot of elements that appear here as components of A Link to the Past.

Also, one more godawful gimmick controller for the road. Sorry about that.

<div id="yt-video-description">We come to the end of the Microvision run, and, well, it's about as good as you can expect from such a limited machine. On the whole, I'd say this final batch of games—all four of which shipped after the console's initial launch—demonstrates some pretty sharp design instincts. None of them stand out as all-timers, but all of them (except for the dreadful Cosmic Hunter) work smartly within the limitations of the Microvision platform. Baseball, for example, only involves the pitching aspect of the game—no attempt is made at fielding, which would overwhelm this poor little device. Sea Duel strips the Battleship concept down to an asymmetrical one-on-one fight. Alien Raiders overcomes the limited number of aliens that the hardware can animate by requiring precision aiming with the analog dial. All in all, some good thinking on display here and, allowing for the limitations of the hardware, a better hit-to-miss ratio than a lot of latter-day portables....

The incredibly seasonal Kings of the Beach—beach volleyball being a perennial yuletide favorite—offers an interesting counterpoint to Silent Service. Both NES carts contain adaptations of computer games that debuted in America from American developers. Both ended up as Nintendo release for American audiences courtesy of... not-American developers. And both have their own distinct vibe.

Nintendo's final push for 1989 feels like someone at the company realized that they had been selling systems on the strength of pack-in peripherals (the Zapper and Power Pad) but had done a miserable job of supporting those devices. Just in time for Christmas, Hanukkah, and Festivus, To The Earth and Short Order/Eggsplode hit shelves to trick gift-shopping parents into thinking that those ungainly plastic gadgets had life in them after all. Never mind that this is the final Power Pad game; who knew? Or cared? Grandma couldn't see the future, but she could write a check for $129, and that's what really counts.

Although it was not designed by Rare (despite the title screen's suggestion to the contrary), Ironsword presents an absolutely faithful follow-up to the very first game a non-Japanese third party publisher on NES commissioned from a non-Japanese studio. If that makes sense. However, does an experience that made for a pretty rollicking good time in December 1987 still sing two years later, given how quickly the NES library has matured and how noticeably the bar for quality has risen? Hmm.

<div id="yt-video-description">This is, no joke, one of the most important handheld video games of all time. A generational leap ahead of anything that had come before it, The King of Fighters R-1 demonstrated decisively not only that the Neo Geo Pocket represented a new era of portable software tech, but also that a portable game powered by decent enough horsepower and a lot of thoughtful design choices could be every bit as substantial and satisfactory as any game for contemporary consoles or arcades. This is the foundation upon which the Neo Geo Pocket line was built. With The King of Fighters R-1, the future of handheld gaming had arrived. Too bad no one noticed!

What further connections could you need for a game that transforms the mechanics and court perspective of Hoops into a full four-quarter pro-league simulation, and a game that turns chess into a fast-paced magical shootout through fields of fire? It's all about transmutation this episode. (A wizard did it, probably.)

<h4 id="youtube-video-description">Youtube Video Description:</h4>

<div id="yt-video-description">No, it's not a video game. But you won't find a better demonstration of the NES's clout circa 1989 than The Wizard.

It's a teen adventure! It's a family drama! But mostly, it's a commercial for Super Mario Bros. 3 and the Universal Studios theme park. (Nintendo didn't have its own theme park yet. Or its own movies, for that matter.) It's not great at being an adventure or drama, but given the way it imprinted itself on young Nintendo fans as an iconic work, it's one hell of a commercial.

Sadly, YouTube's copyright system doesn't understand media law and the role of Fair Use in a critical or transformative fashion, so this video can't be monetized. So, would you kindly:
